Scaffolding in Philippines
What is a Scaffolding?
Scaffolding is a provisional structure made of tubes and plates that serves as a safe and stable platform for workers to perform building construction, repair, maintenance and inspection at an inaccessible high level. It is also designed to carry and hoist building tools and equipment with significant weight such as bricks and concrete. Scaffolding may be made of timber, bamboo or steel, and can be fixed, mobile, free-standing or attached to an adjacent structure.
The primary use of scaffolding in the Philippines is to provide support and protection for workers and materials during construction activities. There are several types of scaffolding, depending on the activity. Nowadays, the structure can be seen in such activities as concert stages, grandstands, ski ramps, observation towers and exhibition stands.
What are the different types of scaffolding?
There are 7 main types of scaffolding in the Philippines:
- Single scaffolding - Used for brick masonry and layering, this is a single-level scaffolding that runs parallel to the wall at a distance of 1.2m.
- Double scaffolding - Used for stone masonry, this is an independent framework consisting of two rows of scaffolding.
- Cantilever scaffolding - This is a type of scaffolding in which the standards are supported by needles, which are attached to the wall.
- Suspended scaffolding - The scaffolding is suspended from the roof of the building via wire ropes and chains, which also allow the platform to be raised or lowered.
- Trestle scaffolding - The scaffolding is equipped with ladders and wheels, which allow for height adjustment and mobility.
- Steel scaffolding - The scaffolding uses steel tubes that are attached to each other using steel fittings.
- Patented scaffolding - This refers to steel scaffolding that uses special types of frames and couplings.
What are the advantages of Scaffolding?
Installing scaffolding in construction sites provides numerous benefits such as:
- Safety – Scaffolding systems are made with four or more anchor points and guardrails, enabling them to provide a stable platform for workers to perform any activity and task without fear of falls and injuries.
- Access – Scaffolding allows the access of workers and transport of materials into elevated construction areas that are otherwise inaccessible from the ground or by a standard ladder.
- Durability – Whether made of steel or wood, scaffolding is designed to last for a long time without succumbing to wear and tear and compromising overall safety.
- Versatility – Scaffolding may be used indoors and outdoors, and is suitable for performing any activity that requires access to heights in a residential, commercial or industrial setting.
- Installation – Scaffolding is easy and quick to assemble and dismantle. Some types can be installed without using tools.
